August Checklist

  • Use mentee needs assessment to set a goal(s) for the school year
  • Review program requirements and accountability measures
  • Discuss the difference between evaluation and mentoring
  • Building tour including office personnel introductions, office supplies and procedures, printer/Copy Center procedures, building traditions, procedures, and protocols, and dress code expectations
  • Review the Building/District Calendar – discuss expectations for back-to-school nights or student/parent orientation events
  • Review CHAMPS training including setting classroom routines and procedures
  • Discuss classroom schedule, bell schedule, alternatives schedules, lunch schedule, etc.
  • Consider how to first communicate with parents or prepare for open house/back-to-school nights
  • Discuss and plan for ongoing parent communication (consider tech options)
  • Create and communicate syllabus/grading policies in line with district and building policies/student handbooks – consider how late work will be handled
  • Discuss substitute procedures, calling in sick, securing a sub, etc.
  • Share emergency phone numbers for your building

K-5 Specific

6-12 Specific

Discuss Math scope & sequence/lesson plans for 1st nine weeks (Which GoMath chapters does the grade-level teach first? Which GoMath lessons are skipped or EngageNY lessons added? 

Review Student Math Accounts

Discuss Canvas and the Canvas Template expectations (HMSHHS Template Task Lists) – schedule time with Marie Henderson as needed

6-8: Discuss Apple Classroom and what apps are available in Self Service for students to install
Discuss Science scope & sequence/lesson plans for 1st nine weeks (Review login information and platform usage for Mystery Science)

Discuss scope and sequence/lesson plans for each “prep” on the mentee’s schedule

Review the Units of Study for the Reading and Writing Workshop for the 1st nine weeks (Prepare for performing beginning of the year Running Records and check digital access to Running Records through TCRWP website.)

Other technology considerations– review login information and platform usage for appropriate content areas
Discuss Social Studies scope & sequence/lesson plans for 1st nine weeks

Discuss Apple Classroom and Seesaw for Schools use – schedule time with Marie Henderson as needed
