Learning Objective: The participant will know, understand, or be able to do the following.

  • Incorporate EPIC Parent Communication into IEP communication and Parent Teacher Conferences

  • PLAAFPs, Goals, and Progress Reporting

  • Personnel Evaluations

Topic 1:

Parent Communication

Read: EPIC Communication Handout. Consider how the parent would perceive each step of communication.

Watch: Consider how PT Conferences will be handled in your building. Check with your mentor/ambassador.

Reflect: EPIC is a framework for organizing your thoughts when communicating about a student. How do you think EPIC would make parent communication better? Share your thoughts in the WeKan Academy Team.

Topic 2:

PLAAFPs, Goals, and Progress Updates

Watch:—Consider the different sections of the PLAAFPs and how you can incorporate the 4 Required Elements.

Read: Goals, Benchmarks, Objectives, and Progress Reports. As you read, think about your students’ goals and the goals you’ve written so far. Are they consistent with the guidance? Use the Goal Worksheet to help write future goals to ensure each component is included.

Progress Reports are required for every IEP goal at the end of each quarter. See the above document for guidance and a video showing how to do progress reports in WebKIDSS.

Reflect: #FLEXShare: A well written PLAAFP helps identify goals and determine if progress is appropriate. What will you do to make sure you have appropriate information in your PLAAFPs? How would you incorporate EPIC into your PLAAFPs and your Progress Reports. Share your thoughts in the WeKan Academy Team.

Knowledge & Orientation

PERSONNEL EVALUATIONS: Certified staff evaluations take place twice a year for new staff. Your evaluation may be done by your building administrator or a special education administrator. If you are in an outlying district, you will be evaluated using the local evaluation tool. If you are in USD 489 you will be evaluated using the E4e tool. Also look for an email from Shanna Dinkel with information about the tool and how to get set up in KEEP2.

Read: Moral Code of Ethics for Educators. Consider what is a professional educator.

Term of the Month:  Related services are developmental, corrective, and  supportive services required to assist a child, who has been identified as a child with an exceptionality, to benefit from special education services.
