Topic 1:

Working on a Team

Read: Special education is most effective when we collaborate with general and special education staff.  (High Leverage Practices 1-3)

Read: SPED and Gen Ed Collaboration. Consider how you have worked with others to help your students.

Watch: Working in a Special Education Team.   The most important thing we do in special education is work with other people. The better we do this, the better we serve the student. When watching consider your own experiences working with other special education staff.

Reflect: Working with others can be challenging, especially when you are new in your position. What has made collaboration difficult with gen ed and special ed? How have your own actions helped or hindered collaboration? Share your thoughts in the WeKan Academy Team.

Topic 2:

Accommodations and Modifications

Read and Watch:IRIS Module. Work through this module to learn about accommodations and how to select, implement, and determine the effectiveness of accommodations.

Read: Common Accs and Mods.

Read: Writing Accommodation and Modifications. As you read, think about your students’ accommodations and the IEPs you’ve written so far. Are they consistent with the guidance? Use the Goal Worksheet to help write future goals to ensure each component is included.

Reflect: Accommodations and modifications can help level the playing field and give students more access to the general education curriculum. What have been your experiences with accommodations? What impact have they had on student performance? Share your thoughts in the WeKan Academy Team.

Knowledge & Orientation

Special Education Library: There is a collection of resources at Rockwell for special education. Lists of available books, tests, and other resources are available from Kiley Vanhorn, but we encourage you to schedule a time to visit the library. If you have a need, there is likely something there that will help.

Watch:  DISC Styles. Communication is critical to our work, so it is important to understand that others communicate different than we do. Watch these videos to understand the DISC styles.

Term of the Month:  "Specially designed instruction" means adapting, as appropriate to the needs of each exceptional child, the content, methodology or delivery of instruction for the following purposes: 1) To address the unique needs of the child that result from the child's exceptionality; and 2) to ensure access of any child with a disability to the general curriculum, so that the child can meet the educational standards within the jurisdiction of the agency that apply to all children.
