Technology Overview

USD 489 uses technology to enhance student instruction.  Besides access to information, computers are used heavily for testing. This includes State KCA testing, STAR assessments, Accelerated Reader quizzes, and many other teacher created tests and quizzes through Moodle and Quia.  Much of our curriculum, all the way down to our elementary Reading and Math series, includes additional online activities and resources for the students. High School and Middle School students also have access to PowerSchool to keep track of grades.  Parents also have access to PowerSchool and can get a weekly email summary of students’ grades.

The district employed a 1:1 ratio for technology for all students at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year.  Hays High school has been a 1:1 school for the last 10 years with students having the ability to take the laptops home.  Hays High School students will be utilizing Windows Surface 3 devices this year.  Students in grades K-2 will have access to iPad Minis this year.  Students in grades 3-8 will have access to iPad Airs.  Most of our classrooms are also equipped with a projector or Apple TV.  Currently, all district schools, the central office, and the transportation department are networked through 1G fiber connections.  The district has a 125MB connection to provide high speed Internet to all its students.
